So you’re engaged huh? We’re so happy for you!
Whether you were expecting it, had a slight inkling or it was a total surprise, in the minutes, hours and days following the proposal, many couples may find themselves asking “where do we go from here?”
We’ve put together a little guide of points you might find useful following your engagement but before the planning begins.
1. Break the Happy News to Your Parents, Siblings and Close Family
Before announcing your betrothal to the world, take this time to tell the ones who mean the most to you both. They may well be waiting with baited breath for your call if your partner made their intentions known prior to the proposal. Your loved ones will greatly appreciate this personal touch – if you can tell them in person, even better!
2. Inform your Grandparents
Grandparents are great! They’ve seen it all, the laughter, the tantrums, the sports days and school plays. Hearing the news straight from you will make them feel valued and appreciated.
3. Extended Family and Best Friends
Sometimes your best friends feel more like family so it’s only natural that you’d want them to be some of the first to know. Well, now’s the time! Your Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and best friends will be super excited to celebrate with you.
4. The “We’re Engaged!” Social Media Post
Once you’ve informed your nearest and dearest personally, you may want to take to social media. Remember, it’s not a necessity to announce the news online but it sure is nice to savour those sweet, sweet well-wishes.
5. Resize Your Ring (If you choose to have one)
Chances are your partner had to guess your ring size. In most cases your ring will come with a certain number of days in which you can return for resizing. You may be without it for a number of weeks but be sure to avoid extra disappointment and cost by making the return within the time window specified in the returns policy. If your ring is too big and needs resizing, it’s best not to wear it while out and about, however tempting it might be. The last thing you want to do is lose it!
Which leads us to…
6. Insuring Your Ring
Let’s put on our sensible hats for a moment. You don’t even want to entertain the notion of losing your ring, I know, but on the off chance it’s misplaced or even stolen, the correct insurance policy will cover the cost of a new one. Depending on the original cost of the ring, it might be a better solution than shelling out for another, and the piece of mind is invaluable.
If you have contents insurance for your home your policy provider will be able to advise you on whether your ring is already covered under your current policy, or provide you with a quote to extend your policy to include your ring. Alternatively there are plenty of providers who can insure jewellery specifically – your local jewellers may be able to help you with this.
7. Thank Your Well-wishers
This may seem obvious but in all the excitement some congratulatory cards, gifts and messages may slip through the Thank You net. These kind people are rooting for you so be sure to show your appreciation.
8. Take a Breath and Soak It In
This special time can be exciting as well as overwhelming. Before any sort of wedding planning gets underway, make sure you take some time as a couple to be happy and revel in your contentment – perhaps a romantic meal, picturesque walk or weekend away to mark the occasion. Really absorb the recent events, you deserve it.
9. Let the Celebrations Begin!
Your family and friends are probably itching to celebrate with you, whether you host a virtual engagement get-together, a soiree in your own home or go all out and book a restaurant or event space.
